October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - It's Important!


October 2009 is being acknowledged as the breast cancer awareness month in the US. The folded pink ribbon has been chosen as the symbol of breast cancer awareness. The White House will be decorated in a dash of pink this weekend, keeping up with the spirit of awareness. It has been planned that pink ribbons will be hung on the columns outside the White House's front doors and will stay there till the weekend. On Friday, October 24th an event in this regard was hosted by the US first lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, the wife of the US vice president. The event was attended by breast cancer survivors and the awareness advocates.

Mrs Obama, donning the pink emblem on her dress, emphasized that getting sick should not mean that you are going bankrupt. She also emphasized that easier insurance policies will help cancer patients in their fight against the disease. Incidentally, Michelle Obama used to work as a hospital administrator in Chicago. Jill Biden, too, had earlier organized an awareness program in Delaware. In USA, every year about 210,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. An organization by the name of Susan Komen foundation are planning to organize a 'mom's day out'in collaboration with students from Elmira free Academy and Southside High School.

Meanwhile, on October 16, a band of five girls performed at Amigos Cantina in Canada to raise funds and make people aware of the menace of breast cancer. The Saskatchewan date of Babes for Breasts, a national all-female fundraising tour brought the regional female artists together in a bid to raise the awareness.

In another important news, Dr. Sunita Chauhan, an Indian robotics-scientist has unveiled a completely non-invasive surgery process for the treatment of breast cancer. This process, unveiled on October 25th use robots known as FUSBOTS to perform surgeries on stage two breast cancer. Dr. Chauhan has invented these FUSBOTS with assistance from a group of 20 students from Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. The clinical trials on animals have shown satisfactory results. Dr. Chauhan says, the human trials will begin after the certification procedure is completed.
